Works With Crystal, Flat-Back and Resin Tooth Gems

This tool is compatible with many standard gem types used in tooth gem application and removal. It can be used with crystal gems, flat-back styles, resin gems, and similar designs commonly used for smile jewelry.

If you work with multiple styles or want a versatile option for home or salon use, this tool offers broad compatibility without overcomplicating the process.

How to Use the Tooth Gem Removal Tool

Follow this quick protocol for safe, enamel-friendly tooth gem removal at home or in the salon. Always work with clean, dry teeth and steady, gentle pressure.

01

Prep the Tooth

Brush and dry the tooth, then isolate the area using gauze or cotton rolls so the surface stays dry. A dry tooth helps you see the adhesive line clearly and improves control during removal.

02

Position the Teflon Tip

Place the soft Teflon insert at the base of the gem, not on the edge of the enamel. Slide the tip gently under the gem so the tool is between the gem and the tooth, hugging the adhesive line.

03

Apply Gentle Side Pressure

Using slow, controlled movements, apply light lateral pressure to lift the gem rather than pulling straight out. Let the adhesive fatigue and release; avoid squeezing hard or twisting on the enamel.

04

Lift & Remove the Gem

Once the adhesive starts to give, continue with small side-to-side motions until the gem pops free. If you meet resistance, reposition the tip instead of increasing force.

05

Polish Away Adhesive

Use a rubber polishing cup, prophy paste, or a fine polishing tool to gently smooth away any remaining adhesive. The tooth surface should feel smooth to the tongue with no sharp edges.

06

Clean & Disinfect the Tool

Rinse off debris, then follow your preferred disinfection or sterilization protocol. The stainless steel body and Teflon insert can be cleaned between uses for hygienic home or professional workflows.

!
Pro tip: If you are unsure whether a tooth has existing restorations, veneers, or sensitivity, defer removal to a dental professional for evaluation before proceeding.

Tooth Gem Removal FAQ

How tooth gem removal actually works, how to get the adhesive off afterwards, what it costs you to get it wrong, and when to hand it to a professional.

This tool is intended for trained providers. Tooth gem removal means shearing a dental adhesive bond off enamel. Done incorrectly it can chip or scratch the tooth surface permanently, and enamel does not grow back.
01 How do you remove a tooth gem?
The gem is sheared off sideways, not pulled straight out. A purpose-made removal tool is positioned at the base of the gem where it meets the adhesive, then light lateral pressure is applied until the bond fatigues and releases. A thin layer of composite stays behind and is polished off afterwards. Correctly done the whole thing takes five to ten minutes and the tooth is left smooth.
02 Can you remove a tooth gem at home?
It is not recommended, and here is the honest reason. Removal means shearing a dental adhesive bond off enamel in a specific direction, then polishing the residue away. Fingernails, tweezers and floss apply force unpredictably and can chip the bonding edge — and enamel does not grow back. If the gem is already loose, careful removal with a proper tool is more reasonable. If it is still firmly bonded, book a provider.
03 How do you get tooth gem glue off your teeth?
A thin layer of composite almost always remains once the gem releases — that is normal, not a mistake. It is cleared with a fine polishing instrument and finished with fine-grit paste. Brushing will not shift it, and picking at it with anything metal risks scratching the enamel underneath. Left in place it traps plaque and stains along the old bond line, which is why the polishing step matters as much as the removal itself.
04 Does removing a tooth gem hurt or damage enamel?
Correct removal is painless and does not damage enamel, because the gem sits on the surface rather than in it. There is no drilling and no anaesthetic. Pain or strong resistance during removal is a signal that the angle or the force is wrong — that is the point to stop and reassess, not to push harder.
05 How long does tooth gem removal take?
Five to ten minutes for a single gem in trained hands, including polishing the adhesive off afterwards. Gems that have been bonded for a long time, or applied with a heavy adhesive layer, sit at the longer end because there is more composite to polish away.
06 What tool is used to remove a tooth gem?
A purpose-made removal plier that applies controlled lateral force at the base of the gem. The soft insert sits against the tooth so the metal never contacts enamel directly, and the adjustable tip lets you match the closing threshold to the gem size. Tweezers, nail tools and floss sawing are not substitutes — they cannot deliver force in a controlled direction.
07 Can crystal tooth gems be removed?
Yes. Flat-back crystal gems bonded with dental-grade composite release cleanly with the correct technique. How much polishing is needed afterwards depends on the adhesive thickness and how long the gem has been in place, not on the gem itself.
08 What does the tooth look like after a gem is removed?
Once the adhesive is fully polished off, the tooth should look and feel the same as it did before the gem was applied — smooth to the tongue, with no ridge or outline. If you can still feel a rough patch or see a faint square where the gem sat, adhesive is still there and needs polishing. That is the most common sign of an incomplete removal.
09 Can tooth gems be removed from veneers or crowns?
A gem bonded to a veneer, crown or composite restoration should be removed by a dentist. Restorative surfaces debond differently from natural enamel, and polishing that is perfectly safe on enamel can dull a glazed porcelain surface permanently.
10 Where can I get a tooth gem removed?
Any tooth gem technician or dental professional who offers removal as a service can do it, and most charge a small fee for a five-to-ten-minute appointment. LaserGlow removes tooth gems at our Clifton and Edgewater locations in New Jersey and our Miami location in Florida. If you are outside those areas, look for a provider who lists removal specifically — not every application artist offers it.
