Tooth gem materials explained
A diamond on tooth is usually not a diamond at all: almost every “diamond tooth gem” is a precision-cut crystal bonded to the enamel. Real diamond tooth jewelry exists, and so do implanted stones, but they are very different products. Here is what each one is, what it costs, and which one you are most likely being sold.
Short answer: most tooth diamonds are crystals, bonded to the surface and fully reversible for about $30 to $100. Real diamonds bond the same way for far more money, and implanted stones are a permanent dental procedure.
The short answer
Diamond on tooth or crystal? What you are most likely getting
“Diamond on tooth,” “tooth diamond” and “crystal tooth gem” are used interchangeably online. They are not the same thing.
Almost every “diamond tooth gem” sold today is a crystal, not a diamond. The vast majority of tooth gems applied in salons and studios, including LaserGlow’s, are precision-cut, lead-free crystals bonded to the enamel surface with dental adhesive. No drilling, and fully reversible.
Real diamond tooth jewelry does exist. It is a different product at a different price: a genuine stone, often costing hundreds to thousands of dollars. And a diamond set into a drilled cavity is a permanent dental procedure, not a cosmetic tooth gem.
So the honest question is not “diamond or crystal?” It is whether you want something reversible that typically costs under $100, or something that costs far more for the same look.

Three different products
Three things people mean by a diamond on teeth
Search for a diamond for teeth and you will find three completely different products. Sorting them out first saves confusion and money.
Crystal tooth gem
A flat-back cut crystal bonded to enamel with dental adhesive.
- Non-permanent, no drilling
- Typically $30–$100 applied
- What most people actually get
Real diamond tooth jewelry
A genuine cut diamond in a flat-back setting, surface-bonded the same way.
- Same application as a crystal
- Much higher stone cost
- Uncommon in salon settings
Diamond grillz
A removable gold or metal cap set with stones that fits over the teeth.
- Not bonded to the tooth
- Taken in and out
- A different industry entirely
Side by side
Diamond tooth gem vs. crystal: how they compare
| Crystal tooth gem | Real diamond tooth gem | Implanted diamond | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Precision-cut, lead-free crystal with a flat back. What LaserGlow sells. | A genuine diamond in a flat-back setting | A stone set into a prepared cavity in the tooth |
| How it attaches | Bonded to the enamel surface with dental adhesive and a curing light | Bonded to the enamel surface, same as a crystal | Requires drilling into the tooth structure |
| Reversible? | Yes, removed cleanly by a trained professional | Yes, same removal process | No. Drilled tooth structure does not grow back |
| Typical cost | Roughly $30–$100 applied | Priced by the stone, commonly several hundred dollars and up | Dental procedure pricing, quoted per case |
| How long it lasts | Typically 4–6 months, sometimes longer | Same range: retention depends on the bond, not the stone | Permanent until a dentist removes it |
| Who applies it | Trained tooth gem artists, salons, studios | Jewelers and dental professionals | Dental professionals only |
Worth knowing: retention has almost nothing to do with what the stone is made of. A real diamond and a cut crystal are held on by the same things: dry isolation, correct etch and bond timing, and a full cure. A crystal placed well outlasts a diamond placed badly. See how tooth gems stay on.
Implanted stones
Is an implanted diamond in a tooth real?
Yes, but it is not what most people picture, and it is not a tooth gem.
Setting a stone into a tooth means preparing a cavity in the enamel and dentin to seat it, the way a dentist prepares a tooth for a filling or an inlay. That is an irreversible dental procedure performed by a dental professional. Enamel does not regenerate, so the preparation is permanent whether the stone stays or not.
A bonded tooth gem works the opposite way. Nothing is removed from the tooth. The gem sits on the surface, held by adhesive, and comes off with the adhesive. Surface-bonded versus structurally set is the single most important difference to understand before you book anything.
Before you book: if a provider offers to “implant” or “set” a diamond in your tooth, ask directly whether any tooth structure will be drilled or removed. If the answer is yes, you are agreeing to a permanent dental procedure and should be talking to a licensed dentist, not a salon.
On a real smile
What a tooth diamond actually looks like up close

Cut beats material at this size
At normal conversation distance, a small stone on a tooth reads as light return, not as a material. Most tooth gems are 1.8mm or 2.2mm, small enough that facet geometry decides how much light comes back.
A precision-cut crystal with clean facets returns light sharply from several angles; a poorly cut stone looks flat whatever it is made of. That is why a premium crystal often photographs brighter than a small, low-grade diamond, and why color changes the look far more than material does.
For cut, clarity and sizing, read how to choose tooth gem crystals.
Making the call
Which should you choose?
- Choose a crystal tooth gemPick this if you want the look without the commitment. It costs a fraction of a diamond, comes off cleanly when you want a change, and at conversation distance a well-cut crystal is hard to tell from a small diamond.
- Consider real diamond tooth jewelryWorth it only if the stone itself matters to you and cost is not a factor. You are paying for the material, not better retention or a better-looking result.
- Talk to a dentist about anything implantedBe certain before you agree to it, because drilled tooth structure cannot be restored.

Same idea, different names
Diamond teeth, teeth bling and tooth studs: what each term means
People search for diamond teeth, teeth diamonds, teeth bling, teeth jewels and tooth studs, and they almost always mean the same thing: a small stone bonded to the front of a natural tooth. Only one version involves drilling, and that is the one to question.
| What people call it | What it usually is | Drilling? |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond teeth, teeth diamonds, diamonds on teeth | A crystal, or occasionally a real diamond, bonded to the enamel surface | No |
| Teeth bling, bedazzled teeth | One or more crystals bonded in a pattern | No |
| Tooth stud | A single small round stone, usually a 1.8 mm or 2.2 mm crystal | No |
| Teeth charms | Shaped gold or white-gold plated designs such as hearts, stars and butterflies | No |
| Teeth jewels, teeth jewelry | The umbrella term for all of the above | No |
| Implanted or permanent diamond on tooth | A stone set into a cavity a dentist prepares in the tooth | Yes. The removed enamel never grows back. |
Are diamonds on teeth permanent?
A bonded stone is semi-permanent. Most last 4–6 months, sometimes longer, depending on placement, bite and aftercare, and a trained provider can remove one without harming the enamel. Only an implanted stone is permanent, because the tooth itself has been changed. Read how tooth gems stay on for the bonding details.
Getting the look
Every style above can be done with a bonded crystal or charm, placed on natural enamel only, never on veneers, crowns or bonding. Browse tooth gem designs and placement ideas, or book at a studio on our tooth gems near me page.
FAQ
Diamond on tooth FAQ
Quick answers about diamond and crystal tooth gems. Still unsure? Contact our team.
Are diamond tooth gems real diamonds?
Usually not. Most products marketed as diamond tooth gems are cut crystal with a diamond-like look.
Genuine diamond tooth jewelry exists, but it is sold as such and priced accordingly. If a listing offers a diamond tooth gem for the price of a crystal, it is a crystal.
How much does a diamond on a tooth cost?
A crystal tooth gem typically runs about $30 to $100 applied. Real diamond tooth jewelry is priced by the stone and commonly runs several hundred dollars or more.
Implanted stones are quoted as a dental procedure. See how much are tooth gems for the full breakdown.
Does getting a diamond on your tooth damage it?
A surface-bonded gem, crystal or diamond, does not damage enamel when it is applied and removed properly, because nothing is drilled or removed.
An implanted stone does involve permanent removal of tooth structure. More in are tooth gems bad for your teeth?
How long does a diamond tooth gem last?
Typically 4–6 months, the same as a crystal.
Wear time comes down to bonding technique, tooth position, bite pressure and habits, not the stone. See how long do tooth gems last.
Can you tell the difference between a crystal and a diamond on a tooth?
Rarely, at normal conversation distance.
Tooth gems are small, and cut quality drives light return far more than material. A precision-cut crystal often reads brighter than a poorly cut small diamond.
Is a diamond grill the same as a diamond tooth gem?
No. Grillz are removable metal caps set with stones that fit over the teeth.
A tooth gem is a single small stone bonded directly to one tooth. Different products, different price ranges, different industries.
Can a diamond tooth gem be removed?
Yes, if it is surface-bonded. A trained professional releases the adhesive without damaging enamel.
Implanted stones require a dentist. See how to remove tooth gems.
Are diamonds on teeth permanent?
Bonded diamonds and crystals are semi-permanent. Most last 4–6 months, sometimes longer.
A trained provider can remove a bonded stone without harming the enamel. Only an implanted stone, set into a drilled cavity, is permanent.
What is a tooth stud?
A tooth stud is a single small round stone, usually a 1.8 mm or 2.2 mm crystal, bonded to the front of a natural tooth.
It is applied like any tooth gem: cleaned, etched, bonded and light-cured, with no drilling.
