FAQ

Professional Whitening FAQ

What do I need to start offering professional teeth whitening?
The core requirements are: professional HP whitening gel (most providers start with 25% HP), gingival barrier for soft-tissue protection, a professional LED whitening light, cheek retractors, desensitizing remineralizing gel for post-treatment aftercare, and a client intake and consent process. The LaserGlow Professional Starter Kit bundles the core supplies for providers setting up a new whitening service.
Which HP gel concentration should I start with?
Most providers starting out use 25% HP as their core daily-use gel. It delivers consistent chairside results for most clients, requires gingival barrier (strongly recommended), and has a manageable sensitivity profile for a range of client types. 16% HP is the right starting point for sensitivity-prone clients or first-time whitening clients. See the full strength guide for detailed selection criteria.
Do I need professional training to offer teeth whitening?
Training requirements vary by state and provider type. Dental professionals (dentists, RDHs, RDAs) operate under existing licensure. Non-dental providers (med spas, salons, whitening technicians) should verify their state's regulations before offering services. Regardless of licensure requirements, professional training in whitening protocols, isolation, client screening, and safety significantly improves outcomes and reduces risk. LaserGlow offers professional whitening training resources for providers at all experience levels.
What is gingival barrier and when is it required?
Gingival barrier is a light-cure gel applied to the gum tissue before whitening to protect soft tissue from HP contact. At LaserGlow, gingival barrier is recommended for all HP whitening concentrations, strongly recommended for 25% HP, and required for 35%, 36%, and 44% HP. See the isolation protocols guide for placement instructions.
Do crowns, veneers, or bonding whiten?
No. Professional HP whitening gel works on natural tooth enamel and dentin. Crowns, veneers, composite bonding, and implant restorations do not respond to hydrogen peroxide whitening and will not change shade. Clients with visible restorations should be informed before treatment that whitening will affect their natural teeth only — the restoration shade will not change.
How long do professional whitening results last?
Professional whitening results typically last 6–18 months before significant shade relapse, depending on dietary habits, tobacco use, oral hygiene, and home maintenance compliance. Clients who use a carbamide peroxide maintenance pen between sessions and follow post-whitening aftercare instructions maintain results significantly longer. See the shade stability and maintenance guide for the full protocol.
What's the difference between professional whitening gel and at-home whitening products?
Professional whitening gels use higher HP concentrations (16%–44%) that are not available over the counter, require soft-tissue isolation protocols, and are designed for chairside application by trained providers. At-home whitening products use significantly lower concentrations — typically under 10% HP or equivalent — and are intended for consumer self-application without isolation or professional oversight. The professional concentrations deliver faster, more dramatic results in a single chairside session.
